Young Chick comes cautiously out of the burrow

  • I shot this American Avocet, (Recurvirostra americana) yesterday about 30 miles west of Othello Washington. While shooting Burrowing Owls, a fellow photographer generously divulged this location, and as you can see, it was worth the short drive to get to the small pond where a flock of perhaps two dozen birds were straining food from the mud base of the pond.<br /> <br /> Avocet_02P5209-12x16

  • This shot of a Female Burrowing Owl was taken in Othello Washington, 06/15/2013. This is the 6th image in a series of 8 shots for the landing sequence on a perch near her den (They nest in abandoned animal dens). Her eyes are not closed, she's just focusing on the landing!   • A 4 week old Burrowing Owl Chick scurrys from the safety of its Burrow as it explores the world around d it. Every photo shoot I go on has at least one favorite image, and for this shoot it is this one. These birds are amazingly inquisitive, tolerant of humans, and very funny to watch. Image taken near Othello Washington on June 19th, 2012. This burrow had 4 mature chicks all learning to fly this day.
  • The Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) is a tiny but long-legged owl found throughout open landscapes of North and South America. This young 4 week old Chick lands on a branch during it's first flight from the burrow, a few meters away. Image taken in Othello Washington on June 19th, 2012 in early morning light.
