Don't be fooled by these pictures of seemingly tame Horses. They are the wild horses of the Namib Desert in Namibia. It is not known how long the Namib Desert Feral Horses have lived on an area covering approximately 350 square kilometres in the Namib Desert, but local speculate they have been there since ‘German times’. As there are no written records about their provenance their origins remain unclear, but there are, of course, quite a few theories. On the day I stopped by to visit with them, a large herd had come to the water hole to drink and rest. This was a good year for them as you can see by their condition. The young foal in this photo was quite curious about me, and came over to sniff and check me out. then he went over to his father who was standing in the partial shade of the pumphouse building, to play. The sequence of shots that follows shows the bond between them. I was amazed that wild horses such as these would allow me to wander among them and touch them. Perhaps they sensed the ' cowboy' in me.
